About Starr Marsett

I know the value of a good education. Public schools educated me and my children and now educate my grandchildren. My mother did not graduate from high school. I did, and later graduated from college while working full time and raising my family. I know very well how critical a sound education is for our children’s future and for the future of Anchorage.

I grew up in a large military family; military service meant our family moved frequently. That, in turn, means I frequently changed schools. That, in turn, means I frequently changed schools. (I know firsthand the challenges that transient school children face - and they're 27% of our student population.)

My family's tradition of service to our country continued with me. I served in teh Air Force and that's where I met my husband. Not only are Dave and I grateful the Air Force introduced us, but we're also grateful that the Air Force brought us to Alaska.

I worked in the banking industry, starting as a teller and working my way up to Vice-President. I am now a Realtor®. Along the way I acquired skills and expertise in budgets, project management, personnel, and hiring.

I’m a mom and grandmother, actively involved in my children’s and grandchildren’s education. I’m a stalwart volunteer, in the classroom and in our community.

My commitment to children and public schools led me to:

  • Serve on many PTA Boards, including serving as President for several school chapters.

  • Volunteering in many classrooms

  • Serve as Executive Board Member for the Fairbanks Resource Center for Parents and Children

  • Volunteer as a CASA,(Court Appointed Special Advocate) for abused and neglected children, and serve on the Executive Board for Friends of CASA

  • Teach classes for Junior Achievement

  • Serve on the Fairbanks North Star School Borough School District’s Policy Review Committee

  • Volunteer with the Fairbanks North Star School Borough School District’s Business Partnership program

  • Work with community members and staff to start the first Charter School in North Pole

I currently serve on the following committees and advisory councils for the Anchorage School District:

  • Capital Improvement Advisory Committee, making recommendations to the School Board for the school bonds and advise them regarding the Six Year Capital Improvement Plan

  • Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC), chair

  • Multicultural Education Concerns Advisory Committee (MECAC)

  • Calendar Committee

Because I want to expand my understanding of issues affecting kids in classrooms, I also work as a substitute teacher

I have always been, and will continue to be, a strong advocate for children. I do not sit idly by when things need to get done.

I respectfully ask for your vote.
